The Way We Really Were

moradaDevout Penitentes in southern Colorado and northern New Mexico gathered in adobe moradas (meetinghouses) during Lent, where hermanos (brothers) remained for the entire 40 days to pray and fast.Year-round, hermanos met and, assisted by hermanas, provided services to others in need. Penitentes were considered to be the “best men” in their communities, but some practices caused suspicion and unwanted curiosity, forcing the brotherhood to go underground for several years. The moradas later reemerged and are still active, but many structures have crumbled to dust.
