Alfonso’s Real Mexican Food
2801 East Main Street
Canon City, CO 81212
(719) 276-0186

Driving through Cañon City on U.S. Hwy 50 it is easy to miss one of the best taquerías in Central Colorado. That’s because it is located inside a Conoco mini-mart off a frontage road on the southeast side of town and takes a bit of searching to locate if you don’t know your way around.

We call it a taquería, but it is much more than that. The menu is vast and the food is prepared quickly. If you are looking for fish tacos, shrimp burritos, mulita, carne asada fries or a chimichanga to take with you on the road or enjoy in the dining room/ mini- mart, you definitely want to give them a try.

Alfonso’s began selling burritos, enchiladas, tortas, and other specialties in 2001 at the current location. They relocated to the highway for three years before moving back to the Conoco.

The restaurant owners describe the food as having its roots in San Luis Potosí, Mexico and some of the flavor combinations can taste downright exotic, but not unfamiliar to the North American palatte.

For a short time some family members operated a similar restaurant in Salida, Reynaldo’s, and many locals quickly became addicted to the fat juicy burritos (including this reviewer) but sadly, saw it leave due to family obligations. Now we have to travel downstream for the best carne asada burrito around these parts. Spiced steak, guacamole, sour cream, lettuce, cheese and pico de gallo make up this meal in a paper wrapper (warning, not for the cholesterol intolerant!).

The prices are very reasonable – although it would be nice if they could update their overhead menu with the most current prices – but on average you’re going to pay around five bucks for a burrito.

The most popular items are the breakfast burritos, nachos supreme and, of course, the carne asada burrito.

There is also a drive-though window in case you are in a hurry, but the dining area is neat and tidy and you can watch folks come and go as they purchase gas and other conveniences.

Alfonso’s is open from 7a.m. to 9p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 7a.m. to 8p.m. on Sundays.
