Westcliffe center seeks one-act plays

Brief by Central Staff

Drama – April 2005 – Colorado Central Magazine

We all know that April 15 is Deadline Day for filing personal income tax returns. It’s also the deadline for submissions to New Rocky Mountain Voices, the seventh annual one-act play contest sponsored by the Westcliffe Center for the Performing Arts. (As the name indicates, it’s based in Westcliffe, but such nomenclature offers no guarantee, since Westcliffe Publishers is in Englewood.)

Submissions will be reviewed by a three-person panel, and up to 10 plays will be forwarded to Chris Tabb, the center’s director in residence. He will chose three plays to be produced on the Jones Theater stage on Sept. 2 and 3, with a cast from the local Westcliffe Center Players acting group.

The winning playwrights will receive cash prizes of $200 apiece. Last year’s winners were Katherine Dubois of Boulder, Dianna A. Lewis of Santa Fé, and David Hall of Fort Collins.

Entrants must reside, or be attending school, in Colorado, New Mexico, or Arizona. Plays will get preference if they have a small cast (up to eight characters), some young characters (to provide opportunities for participants in the center’s youth workshops) and can be produced with one set (to simplify staging).

Submissions must include:

— Cover letter (four copies) with a summary of the playwright’s experience and goals, contact information, and the like.

— One page synopsis (four copies) of each submission.

— Four copies of the manuscript.

— $5 for each play submitted, check made out to WCPA.

— Self-addressed stamped envelope for return, if desired.

Plays should be mailed to New Rocky Mountain Voices 2005, P.O. Box 689, Wescliffe CO 81252, or sent by express to New Rocky Mountain Voices 2005, 209 Main St., Westcliffe CO 81252.
