The route of America’s yard sale

Brief by Central Staff

Local Events – May 2005 – Colorado Central Magazine

If you see people driving slowly along U.S. 50 on the penultimate weekend of May, they may not be lost. They could be looking for participants in the sixth annual Great U.S. 50 Yard Sale, which extends coast-to-coast May 21-23.

It started in Indiana in 2000, and has since expanded along the highway’s route from Ocean City, Md., to Sacramento, Calif.

The sale isn’t exactly organized, but it is coördinated by the people at www.route50.com, who advise that the event should serve to “promote tourism along U.S. 50, to unite the many diverse communities, to provide opportunities for fund-raising by civic organizations, to aid the environment through recycling, and to serve as an opportunity for individuals to enjoy a great weekend of sales.”

The idea is to set up a sale within sight of the highway, and “sales are limited only by the law and the imagination.”

In Colorado, Chaffee County is participating for the first time, thanks to Christy Culp, the assistant to the town manager in Poncha Springs, mail@ponchaspringscolorado.us. Frémont Coun ty sales are organized by Catherine Bland of Cotopaxi, info@ColoradoMountains.org, 719- 942-3221, and by Ione Stroup of Cañon City, 719-275-3482, ioneandlarrystroup@netzero.net.

Montrose, Otero, and Bent counties are also participating; to date, no one has stepped up from Mesa, Delta, Gunnison, Pueblo, or Prowers County. We note that U.S. 50 also passes through Saguache County for a few miles in the Sargents area on the west side of Monarch Pass.
