Purple privies will sprout on BV lawns

Buena Vistans have enjoyed indoor plumbing for many years, but even so, privies will appear on lawns there in May and June. They won’t be full-size two-holers, though; they’re purple miniatures designed to raise money for historic preservation through Buena Vista Heritage.

If an outhouse appears in a yard, the resident can pay a modest fee for removal. For a larger fee, the resident can have it moved to someone else’s yard, and an even larger fee will take the privy out of circulation.

The Purple Privy Preservation Project will start in May to honor National Preservation Month, and continue through June so that summer residents can participate. It is modeled after the pink flamingo fundraiser that raised money for the Angel of Shavano Hospice last year.

The money raised in Buena Vista will help restore and operate the Courthouse Museum, the Turner Farm, the Buena Vista Depot, and the St. Elmo Schoolhouse.

Volunteers are needed to relocate the privies; each shift is only four days long. If you’re interested in helping, email buenavistaheritage@msn.com or call 719-395- 8331.
