Last steam was in 1969

Letter from Neil Reich

Enjoyed your article in the May issue on the return of steam operations on the Rio Grande Scenic Railroad. This should help build ridership on what is already a beautiful railroad experience.

On the D&RGW narrow gauge line between Alamosa and Durango steam-powered freight trains did run in 1967 and 1968, with very limited freight service in 1969 before the line was abandoned. I was fortunate to be one of those recording these last trips on film during those years. It’s hard to believe that it has been 40 years since the end of freight operations on the narrow gauge.
