Democracy on the march

Democracy on the march: By the time you read this, George Bush II will have been elected president of Iraq, thanks to the magic of Diebold electronic voting equipment, which beat out truckloads of ballots smuggled in from Iran.

Class struggle: This expression is now a pet peeve of congressional Republicans, who use it to try to trip up the opposition. In neo- con newthink, class struggle is as obsolete as the Marxists who coined the terminology. In the new utopia of world trade, we all make a comfortable living off our investments, and shop for all our needs at heavenly Wal- Marts, where God’s little blue- jacketed elves stock the shelves with goods created on the spot by the omnipotent maker. Third- world children now gorge themselves on Froot Loops while playing with their laptops on chemically weed- free bluegrass lawns beneath the protection of stately suburban two- bedroom homes faced with fake rock and vinyl siding created by you- know- who. The sort of work which skins knuckles and makes the back complain is done only on reservations set aside for unfortunate non- believers.

World trade: The high priests and priestesses of the Church of Our Lady of the Perpetual Mark- Up met again in Hong King while riot police faced off against disciplined squadrons of Korean farmers (gol- lee, we thought the working class was history!), but inside the protected space of the meetings, they couldn’t agree to much after all that fanfare. Meanwhile, democracy in South America seems to be leaning more and more to the left as it takes a good look at the mess the Yanquis are making. Lucky for them, all those counter- insurgency mercenaries and abuse- and- torture subcontractors that Ms. Rice hasn’t heard about are elsewhere, working overtime.
