¡No es Brazo!

Brief by Central Staff

Geography – October 2001 – Colorado Central Magazine

In a discussion of place names in the September edition, our bifocal-wearing publisher misread Rio Bravo on a map as Rio Brazo.

Rio Bravo is the Mexican name for the river known to us as the Rio Grande, and in colonial times as the Rio Grande del Norte.

Bravo has several meanings; the most relevant appears to be “wild” or “unruly.” As mentioned before, “we’re eager to be corrected by someone more knowledgeable.”

We also note that there is a Brazos County and River in Texas, as well as a Brazos Peak in New Mexico.
