Year 2000 will bring 2,000 cyclists

Brief by Central Staff

Coming Events – March 2000 – Colorado Central Magazine

Last year, we had to go from Salida to Gunnison on the same morning that 2,000 bicyclists were peddling from Gunnison to Salida on the Ride the Rockies tour sponsored by the Denver Post.

The cyclists were taking Monarch Pass, so we drove over unpaved Marshall Pass, thereby avoiding the worst of the congestion.

This year’s route doesn’t cross Monarch, but it still covers quite a bit of Central Colorado and the San Luis Valley.

Here’s the schedule for the 458-mile tour:

June 18: Trinidad to Walsenburg via Cucharas Pass.

June 19: Walsenburg to Alamosa via North La Veta Pass.

June 20: Alamosa to Salida via Poncha Pass.

June 21: Salida to Leadville.

June 22: Leadville to Frisco via Frémont Pass.

June 23: Frisco to Granby.

June 24: Granby to Idaho Springs via Berthoud Pass.

And if you’re interested in helping accommodate the cyclists, contact your local chamber of commerce — they’re all looking for volunteers.
