Let me recommend a book about understanding numbers: Innumeracy by John Allen Paulos, published by Hill & Wang.
It’s only 135 pages, but it’s an entertaining look at the common and often debilitating results of mathematical misconceptions. Paulos looks at the practical problems from fast food to politics. It is a good reality check.
