Just a short note to inform you that my wife and I stopped at the McDonald’s on Highway 50 in Salida on a December Saturday, and ordered “Big Breakfasts,” a menu item.

I usually don’t check my receipt but on this occasion I did, and I smarted when I saw that I paid a 52¢ tax for eating in.

Despite growth, most of us are worse off than we were

Dear Editor,

Re: Letter from the editors, January 1999.

Your letter on economic “growth” overlooked an important paradox. Namely, that the “richer” we get the less we seem able to afford. When economic numbers increase, why is there not a commensurate increase in our individual or collective wherewithal?
