MANY A GREAT IDEA first surfaced on a beverage napkin while the creator wielded a pen in one hand and a cocktail in the other. And rumor has it that Salida’s Artwalk had similar origins. “I think it basically started over a couple of beers by Michael Boyd and Michael Parry,” says Geraldine Alexander, who, along with artist Boyd, co-owns the Salida working studio, cultureclash.

Salida ranks well as art town, but is it really affordable?

Creative, sure. Fresh air, indeed. But affordable?

The third edition of The 100 Best Small Art Towns in America has just come out, and Salida has moved up in the ratings. It wasn’t listed at all in the first edition, ranked 41st in the second, and now holds 30th place.

Another town in our area, the old silver camp of Creede near the headwaters of the Rio Grande, made its first appearance, coming in 82nd.

The San Luis Valley sits just upriver from Taos and Santa Fé, and the connection appears to be growing.

The Denver Post featured Valley art in a March 15 article, which observed that “The arid, mountainous landscape and the multicultural mix of Anglo, Spanish, and Indian traditions that inspired the Taos school of Southwestern art … exist here, too. Even the culture of Taos’s fabled artist colony earlier this century has been somewhat replicated…”
