Sending money to the right places

With a name like “Colorado Public Radio,” you’d think it was an outfit which serves the whole state. But it’s not — it’s essentially a station based in Denver with repeaters in various parts of the state.

It does serve Gunnison and Leadville, but it does not serve Salida, Buena Vista, South Park, or the San Luis Valley — even though it sends fund-raising letters to people in those places.

So if you listen to public radio, and you get a fund-raising pitch in the mail, pay close attention to make sure it’s for a station you actually listen to, like KRZA in Alamosa, KUNC from Greeley (repeater on Mt. Princeton), or KRCC from Colorado Springs (repeaters for Westcliffe, South Park, Salida, and the northern San Luis Valley).

In other words, don’t send money to Colorado Public Radio even if you listen to public radio in Colorado — unless you’re sure you listen to Colorado Public Radio (89.1 in Gunnison, 103.9 in Leadville).

CPR tried this before a few years ago, and our publisher complained about it in his Denver Post column. CPR said it was just an oversight and they really weren’t trying to steal donors from other stations. And for several years thereafter, we didn’t get their solicitation letters. Then one arrived on May 10.
