The Saguache County Museum in Saguache will open as usual this year on May 28, the Sunday before Memorial Day, but without the traditional parade, barbecue, and craft festival in Otto Mears Park.

Even so, there will still be a celebration. As a museum press release put it, there will “be a return to older times by inviting talented artisans and craftsmen to do demonstrations of their work in the museum yard, and perhaps sell some of their creations also.” So there will be “less fanfare than most of our openings during the past 47 years.”

There will also be music in the museum yard from the Seat of the Pants Philharmonic, as well as soft ice cream.

As for food, there’s a new restaurant opening across the street, Dessert First, run by Lynn and Mike Brill, and it will serve a barbecue of natural beef provided by Jim and Frances Coleman.

The museum now has handicapped-accessible restrooms, and will be featuring its newest book, Bonanza and the Kerber Creek District by Helen Ashley Kempner.

Admission is $3 per adult and $1 for children 12 and under. The museum, staffed by volunteers, is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily May 28 through Sept. 17.
