Mining the Nostalgia Vein

The motto of Paydirt Magazine is “A voice for mining since 1938,” but they might want to change it to “If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em.”

Based in Bisbee, Arizona, the monthly publication chronicles the mining industry worldwide, with a special focus on the American West. But mining is in decline, which inspires occasional commentary that the industry might turn into a mere facet of history, instead of being a vital part of the American economy.

In other words, mining museums may outnumber the operating mines everywhere someday soon, as is the case now in Leadville, where there has been no production since the Black Cloud closed a few years ago.

Paydirt is ready, though. It has launched a companion publication, American Mining Heritage, “the magazine for visitors to American mine tours, museums, and heritage sites.”

They ran a sample inside their February edition, and plan to start selling it at historic places this summer. For particulars, you can contact them at paydirt@theriver.com, 520-432-2244, or P.O. Drawer 48, Bisbee AZ 85603.
