Great accomplishments

Letter from Frank Sniveley

History – November 2004 – Colorado Central Magazine

Ed,

You may have seen it already, but if not, take a look at http://amconmag.com/20041011/cover.html, which is a sort-of tongue in cheek set of advice for would-be imperialists, based on Machiavelli’s The Prince.

I’m most reminded of the article you ran in Colorado Central, on Juan Bautista de Anza, several years ago [http://www.coloradocentralmagazine.com/archive/cc1999/00670216.html]. The difference is, of course, that de Anza WAS highly effective!

Also, the feature cited mentions another highly effective historical figure, the “real” Richard Burton, who translated the Rubiyat, discovered the source of the Nile, and a variety of other things. I wouldn’t try to presume to pass any judgment on either de Anza or Burton; their accomplishments are on a much higher level than I could dream to do.
