Crystal Mountain Center wants playwrights

Brief by Central Staff

Drama – March 2003 – Colorado Central Magazine

The Crystal Mountain Center for the Performing Arts has changed its name to the Westcliffe Center for the Performing Arts, but it’s still sponsoring the annual one-act play contest.

There’s a change, though. The contest had been limited to Colorado playwrights, but New Mexico entries are welcome this year, and there are plans to expand it to the entire Mountain West in coming years.

Thus the contest’s name has changed from New Colorado Voices to New Rocky Mountain Voices 2003.

Local jurors will select up to 10 plays, which will then be evaluated by the Center’s director-in-residence, Rick Barbour. He will select two winning plays that will be staged Aug. 5 and 6 at the Jones Theater in Westcliffe. Winners will also receive $200 apiece; last year’s winners were Linda Berry of Aurora and Rebecca Burroughs of Lakewood.

If you want to submit a one-act play, the contest particulars are available at www.westcliffecenter.org, or you can write to P.O. Box 790, Westcliffe CO 81252. Deadline for entries is April 1.

And if you want to learn something of the craft, the Center has scheduled a seminar on Aug. 5, where Barbour will share his knowledge. Cost is $25 ($15 for those who submitted plays), and you can make a reservation at 719-783-3004, or by emailing co-ordinator Will Sibbald at will@codypark.com.
