Courage is the true currency

Letter from David Hester

War on Terror – April 2002 – Colorado Central Magazine

Hi, Mr. Ed,

Two letters I especially liked were from Slim Wolfe of Villa Grove and Dick Conway, WA who gave insight into why our nation was attacked. It would seem that Washington would wonder why 1/3 of the world hates our foreign policy if we support all the Arab dictatorships who seemingly oppress the people. And we support a nation which has people in occupied territory, so they throw stones and blow things up. We should not be so one-sided in our Middle East policy.

This spring we will have the high school winners in the Ann Frank essay contest. It is a very good program that promotes tolerance and understanding. The theme of those who were in the holocaust is “never again.” Yet this seems to be a self-serving epitaph as never have our Jewish friends mentioned the holocaust in Cambodia or the religious and cultural genocide in Tibet (no oil there). So we could ask, “If the Tibetans were Jewish, would our foreign policy change and if so why?” (My wife is from Tibet.)

Political and spiritual correctness is just tyranny with manners. I want people to have the courage to be unpopular. Popularity is history’s pocket change. Courage is history’s True Currency.

So, when will the Gadfly of Salida tell us more about the dealings of the Colorado State Land Board. Ed, you need to follow up with those Thomas Nast articles. Will the big developer get to keep the land at Beaver Creek for $1,500 an acre and sell 30 acre lots for 2 million each and make 10 million? Will those people from Kansas get the Little Cochetopa access with dynamic mountain views of the Collegiate Peaks so the people of Colorado get grassland and desert? The people, Ed, are calling for a follow-up story.
