A real work-out for travelers

Brief by Central Staff

Tourism – June 2003 – Colorado Central Magazine

Salida was named one of “the 48 Best Multi-Sport Towns You Can Drive To” in the June edition of Hooked on the Outdoors, “The Original Backyard Travel & Gear Magazine.”

The page-long piece was enthusiastic, although not quite accurate. It said that “Salida hits its peak in July during FIBArk,” and that festival always happens in June. It also observed that FIBArk is “a party that lasts for five days,” so “Don’t be surprised to see river rats asleep under bushes after a long, hard night at the Victoria Tavern.”

It listed a 24-hour agenda for the ambitious Salida visitor, starting at 6 a.m. with fishing in the river and concluding with a late bedtime at the Thomas House. From 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., it suggested “Jeep to Salida’s Ghost Towns: St. Elmo, Tincup, and Bonanza.”

None of the three requires a four-wheel drive, and a trip to and from any of them, let alone all three, would likely take longer than two hours. So if you see some frazzled visitors this summer, this may explain it.
